Dangjin Police Station Conducts Phishing Prevention Education for the Elderly at Senior University...

Following a series of phishing crimes targeting the elderly, the Dangjin Police Station in South Chungcheong Province has launched customized crime prevention education for seniors in its jurisdiction.

On the 3rd, the Dangjin Police Station conducted phishing crime prevention education, including voice phishing, for 150 participants, including students and volunteers from the Western Senior University, at the Dangjin 2-dong Administrative Welfare Center.

According to the Dangjin Police Station, crimes involving impersonating credit card delivery personnel, credit card company consultants, or administrative welfare center officials to induce victims to install malicious apps on their mobile phones, and then extorting money by impersonating the Financial Supervisory Service or the Prosecutor's Office, have recently been surging, primarily among those in their 50s to 70s.

In fact, there have been incidents where a woman in her 60s residing in Godae-myeon, Dangjin-si, and a woman in her 70s residing in Hapdeok-eup fell victim to voice phishing scams impersonating investigative agencies, suffering losses of approximately 150 million won each. In response, the Dangjin Police Station’s Phishing Crime Investigation Team analyzed local victim cases and planned an educational program tailored to the needs of the elderly. Team Leader Lieutenant Yoon Hong-gyu, who led the lecture that day, delivered an easy-to-understand explanation of the recently prevalent scams involving impersonating credit card delivery personnel, actual victim cases, and specific countermeasures.

In addition, members of the Financial Crime Prevention Group of the Dangjin Police Station Veterans Association, composed of retired police officers, lent their support by conducting a campaign to distribute prevention promotional materials to residents in the Dangjin 2-dong area.

Meanwhile, the Dangjin Police Station plans to continue expanding customized phishing crime prevention education and promotional activities for the elderly and vulnerable groups in the region.
