Gongju Campus Turns into ‘Chaos’ During Explanatory Meeting on the Gongju-Chungnam National University Merger
Amidst extreme local backlash over the proposed merger between Gongju National University and Chungnam National University, an explanatory meeting held at the Gongju Campus was disrupted for over three hours due to fierce protests from citizens, alumni, and local politicians.
On the 3rd, Gongju National University held an explanatory meeting regarding the merger with Chungnam National University at the auditorium of the Industry-Academic Research Center on the Gongju Campus, attended by faculty, staff, students, alumni, and citizens. Initially, the university planned to share the background and necessity of the merger, as well as the key contents of the application, followed by a Q&A session.
However, as soon as President Lim Kyung-ho took the podium to give his explanation, protests erupted from citizens holding opposing picket signs and representatives of civic groups.
Attendees shouted slogans such as "President, step down from the podium" and "Defend Gongju National University," pushing forward. As shouting and jeers ensued, the venue quickly descended into chaos. Consequently, President Lim's explanation could not proceed normally for over two hours. The point of strongest opposition from the local community is the feared "hollowing out of the Gongju Campus" and "damage to the local economy" following the merger.
Critics point out that if similar and overlapping departments at Gongju National University and Chungnam National University are merged, the movement of departments and students will be centered in Daejeon, dealing a direct blow to the commercial district of Gongju.
Choi Chang-seok, Chairman of the National Gongju National University Alumni Scholarship Foundation, who attended the event, cited relevant survey results and warned, "If similar departments are merged, a concentration of students at the Daejeon Campus is inevitable, which will directly lead to an outflow from the Gongju Campus and the hollowing out of the city center."
A citizen present at the scene also raised their voice, stating, "If Gongju National University students leave, the local economy, including the commercial district around Singwan-dong and the studio apartment area, will collapse."
Criticism regarding procedural legitimacy was also fierce.
Attendees criticized the lack of information disclosure and the insufficient procedures for gathering opinions from stakeholders, urging the presentation of clear grounds for the department reallocation plan and the expected benefits of the merger. Local political circles have also joined the ranks of opposition. Kim Young-bin, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea’s Gongju, Buyeo, and Cheongyang Regional Committee, who was present at the scene, strongly condemned the situation, declaring, "I will stand with the citizens to the end to protect Gongju National University in obedience to their will."
Having completed briefing sessions for the Cheonan Campus on the 1st and the Yesan Campus on the 2nd, Gongju National University is scheduled to hold a "Dialogue with Gongju Citizens" at the Gongju Art Center Goma on the 8th.
However, given the strong backlash within the Gongju region, fierce clashes over issues such as the relocation of academic departments and the impact on the local economy are expected to continue at upcoming resident meetings.
