[Column] Janggun-myeon, Sejong City: Dreaming of a Historical Park Where Kim Yu-sin and Gyebaek Reconcile...

Janggun-myeon, Sejong Special Self-Governing City.

Even the name is unique.

It is not a common place name in Korea.

The fact that the burial site of Jeoljae Kim Jong-seo—a renowned prime minister who pioneered the northern frontier and whose title "Janggun" (General) became the place name—is located here is, in itself, a historical asset possessed by Sejong City.

The renowned prime minister Kim Jong-seo was a figure who expanded the national territory by leading the development of the Six Northern Garrisons under the command of King Sejong the Great of Joseon.

He is a historical figure who left a deep mark on our modern perception of the northern territories of the Korean Peninsula.

However, it is paradoxical.

One cannot help but ask the question: Why is there no portrait or statue symbolically displaying the spirit and achievements of the great leader Kim Jong-seo in the historical space of Janggun-myeon, which embraces such a monumental historical figure? Furthermore, the government's standard portrait project to officially present the image of the great tiger Kim Jong-seo to the public now needs to be discussed from a new perspective.

I draw attention to a special figure as a starting point for this.

That figure is Zinurov Rafael, known as a Russian politician, former senator, and sculptor.

The fact that he took an interest in Korean history and artistically embodied Admiral Yi Sun-sin and General Kim Yu-sin can be a crucial element in making this project symbolic.

In particular, the renowned Prime Minister Kim Jong-seo is a historical symbol of the "Northern Expansion."

Therefore, for a Russian artist situated in the heart of the North to gaze upon Joseon's northern pioneering heroes and interpret their images through art carries significance beyond the mere production of sculptures.

A Northern artist gazing upon the Korean heroes who pioneered the North.

This alone constitutes a form of cultural diplomacy.

And from here, another historical imagination begins.

Chungcheong is a land that has produced countless heroes.

Kim Yu-sin of Jincheon.

Gye Baek of Nonsan.

Yi Sun-sin of Asan. And Kim Jong-seo, the renowned prime minister of Janggun-myeon, Sejong.

Although their eras and political situations differed, they were all figures who lived their lives to protect their nations and people.

However, history also holds tragedy.

Hwangsanbeol, 660 AD.

Gye Baek of Baekje and Kim Yu-sin of Silla were forced to point their swords at each other; one fought to defend Baekje, while the other led the Silla army.

The outcome of that day was recorded in history books, but today, 1,500 years later, we can ask a new question that transcends the logic of winners and losers.

“Why did they have to fight?”

And there is a more important question.

“Today, 1,500 years later, can we not bring them together again?”

I believe it is possible.

Not through politics, but through art.

Not through war, but through the language of peace.

Kim Yu-sin and Gye Baek: Reconciliation After 1,500 Years

What if we were to shed new light on Kim Jong-seo, the renowned prime minister who pioneered the northern frontier, through Zinurov’s sculpture at the Sejong Janggun-myeon Historical Park,

and capture the historical significance of Kim Yu-sin and Gye Baek—representative figures of Chungcheong—in that space?

The two men, who met as enemy commanders at Hwangsanbeol, would meet again in 21st-century Sejong.

However, this time they would not meet wielding swords.

They would meet as historical companions symbolizing peace.

This is not a proposal to glorify the history of the past.

Rather, it is a proposal to remember historical tragedies as they are, while sublimating them into a message of reconciliation and peace for future generations.

The meeting of Kim Yu-sin and Gye Baek can symbolize the history of the Korean Peninsula, extending beyond the history of Chungcheong.

And if we place the renowned prime minister Kim Jong-seo at the center of this, Sejong Janggun-myeon would naturally acquire a historical narrative.

Kim Jong-seo, the renowned prime minister who pioneered the northern frontier.

Kim Yu-sin and Gye-baek, who determined the fate of the Three Kingdoms.

And art that reconnects them through the language of 21st-century peace.

Finding the face of Kim Jong-seo is finding the face of King Sejong.

History must be remembered.

However, a history park should not merely be a warehouse for preserving the past.

It is a place where citizens of the present learn history, and where future generations dream new dreams.

Therefore, I propose that Sejong City actively discuss re-examining the government standard portrait project and developing historical and cultural content befitting the historical stature of the renowned statesman Kim Jong-seo.

And as a first step, I propose hosting a special exhibition of sculptures by the renowned statesman Kim Jong-seo and world heroes, including works by Zinurov.

If the sculpture exhibition is successful, the next step becomes even clearer.

It is to expand the History Park of the Renowned Statesman Kim Jong-seo beyond a simple local burial ground and memorial space into a "World Heroic Great Figures History Park."

I intend to continue that story in the next column.

Janggun-myeon, Sejong.

The answer lies within the name itself.

A city that embraces the history of heroes and makes their spirit known to the world.

I believe this can serve as another starting point for Sejong to advance beyond being the administrative capital of the Republic of Korea and become a global city.
