사전에 약속된 약 5분간의 현장 인터뷰. 짧다면 짧은 시간이었지만, 시민들의 삶과 환경 안전에 직결된 핵심 현안의 진위를 확인하기에는 결코 가볍지 않은 기회였다. 그러나 지난 25일 충남도 정책현안 조정회의 현장에서 이뤄진 엄승용 보령시장의 취재 대응은 깊은 아쉬움을 남긴다.

당시 제기된 질문은 보령머드축제 과정에서 불거진 오염 머드 유해성 논란과 내년도 대책, 그리고 보령 지역을 위협하는 소나무재선충병 방제 방안이었다. 

이에 대해 엄 시장은 “과학적으로 검증했고 문제가 없다”, “더 면밀히 대응하겠다. 잘하겠다”는 식의 원론적인 입장만을 남긴 채 구체적인 설명을 생략했다. 

어떤 검사 기관에서 무슨 항목을 조사했는지, 사용한 머드는 어떤 방식으로 회수·처리되었는지 등 정작 시민들이 가장 알고 싶어 하는 실질적 근거와 데이터는 빠져 있었다. 재선충병 방제에 대한 질문 역시 더 이상 이어지지 못했다.

오염 머드 사후처리와 재선충병 문제는 단순한 시정 홍보 사안이 아니다. 시민의 안전 및 지역 생태계와 직결된 민감한 환경 문제다. 

보령시가 머드의 유해성에 진정 자신감이 있다면, 짧은 답변이나 회피성 반응 대신 검사 항목과 결과 수치, 처리 관로 내역 등을 투명하게 공개하면 될 일이다. 재선충병 또한 피해 규모와 예산, 향후 방제 로드맵을 상세히 공개해 불필요한 불안을 해소해야 한다.

현장에서 불거진 ‘깡패’ 표현 관련 공방 역시 명확한 사실관계 정리와 유감 표명이 필요하다. 비록 시장 측이 해당 기자를 지칭한 것이 아니라고 부인했을지라도, 시민을 대변해 질문하는 언론과의 현장에서 잡음이 발생했다면 당사자가 적극적으로 당시 상황을 설명하고 불필요한 오해를 소거하는 것이 바람직하다.
