충청남도 농업기술원 생활원예관에 2억 년 전 원시 지구의 강인한 생명력을 고스란히 품은 고대 식물 ‘소철’의 암꽃이 화려하게 피어났다. 

평소 접하기 어려운 희귀한 자연의 선물이 전하는 이색적인 볼거리에 방문객들의 발길과 관심이 집중되고 있다.

‘살아있는 화석’으로 널리 알려진 소철은 약 2억 년 전 중생대 공룡 시대부터 지구상에 존재해 온 대표적인 원시 식물이다. 특히 암그루와 수그루가 명확히 나뉘는 ‘암수딴그루’라는 독특한 생태적 특성을 지니고 있다. 

이 중에서도 암꽃은 개화하는 조건이 무척 까다롭고 시기 또한 극히 제한적이어서, 평소 일반 관람객들이 일상에서 직접 눈으로 관찰하기가 매우 어려운 희귀한 꽃으로 정평이 나 있다.

이번에 생활원예관 한가가운데서 웅장한 자태를 드러낸 소철 암꽃은 단단한 줄기 최상부 중심 점에서 황갈색의 부드러운 깃털 모양 구조가 방사형으로 소담스럽게 펼쳐지는 독특한 외형을 자랑한다.
