제9회 전국동시지방선거 본투표를 단 하루 앞둔 2일, 오석진 대전광역시교육감 후보 선거대책위원회가 온라인을 중심으로 급속히 퍼지고 있는 이념 편향성 허위사실 유포 행위에 대해 강력한 사법 조치를 예고하며 정면 돌파에 나섰다.

오석진 후보 선대위는 이날 긴급 입장문을 발표하고 일부 특정 후보 측 선거운동원들이 SNS와 학부모 온라인 커뮤니티, 단체 대화방 등을 통해 오 후보를 공산주의자로 몰아가는 악의적인 허위 사실을 조직적으로 유포하고 있다며, 이에 대해 무관용 원칙으로 법적 대응에 착수하겠다고 밝혔다.

선대위에 따르면, 최근 지역 학부모와 유권자들이 대거 참여한 온라인 공간에서 오 후보가 ‘단재신채호선생장학회 회장’을 맡고 있다는 이력을 근거로 그를 특정 이념 성향을 가진 좌익 인물인 것처럼 묘사한 비방 게시물들이 무분별하게 확산되고 있는 것으로 파악됐다.

문제가 된 단재신채호선생장학회는 지난해 3월 창립된 순수 장학 단체다. 구한말과 일제강점기 대표적 민족주의 사학자인 신채호 선생의 애국정신과 고결한 교육철학을 계승하고, 지역의 미래 인재 양성을 지원하는 것을 최우선 목표로 삼고 있다. 

현재 오석진 후보가 회장을 맡고 있으며, 한국교원대 차우규 총장이 상임고문으로, 강미애 세종교육감 후보 등 정파와 이념을 초월한 교육계 저명인사들이 회원으로 대거 참여하고 있다.

실제로 신채호 선생은 충북교육청을 비롯한 공공 교육계에서도 그의 교육적·민족적 가치를 높이 평가해 직속 기관으로 ‘단재교육연수원’을 설립해 운영하는 등, 이념과 정파를 떠나 온 국민의 존경을 받는 인물이다.

대전 지역의 한 원로 교육계 인사는 교육감 선거는 백년지대계를 책임질 수장을 뽑는 만큼 학생과 학부모에게 가장 모범을 보여야 하는 선거라며, 선거 막판 판세를 흔들기 위해 근거가 전혀 없는 낙인찍기식 사상 공세를 반복하는 것은 결코 바람직하지 않다고 일갈했다. 

오석진 후보 선대위는 이번 사태를 단순한 후보 개인에 대한 비방을 넘어, 대한민국 독립운동사와 애국선열의 고귀한 명예를 심각하게 훼손하는 반역사적 범죄 행위로 규정했다.
