더불어민주당 논산시장 선거대책위원회가 1일 대전 유성구 한화에어로스페이스 대전사업장에서 발생한 폭발 참사와 관련해 성명을 내고, 논산 양촌면에 위치한 유도무기 탄두공장의 안전성 문제를 정면으로 제기하며 국민의힘 백성현 후보를 강하게 비판했다.

민주당 논산시장 선대위는 이날 입장문에서 “대전 한화 유도무기 공장 폭발 사고로 소중한 생명이 희생된 것에 대해 깊은 애도를 표하며 부상자들의 빠른 쾌유를 기원한다”고 운을 뗐다. 

이어 “이번 사고는 결코 남의 일이 아니다”라며 “사고가 발생한 대전사업장에서 생산하는 다연장로켓 ‘천무’의 핵심 부품인 신관과 탄두를 제조하는 KDI 공장이 바로 우리 논산 양촌에 있기 때문”이라고 지적했다.

선대위 측은 “폭발 위험이 있는 화약을 취급하는 시설임에도 불구하고, 논산 공장 반경 1km 이내에 초등학교와 어린이집이 있어 주민들은 늘 이 같은 대형 사고를 우려하며 공장 확장에 반대해 온 것”이라고 설명했다.

특히 선대위는 이번 대전사업장 참사가 백성현 후보의 안일한 안전 인식을 그대로 드러냈다고 날을 세웠다. 

입장문에 따르면 백 후보는 시장 재직 시절 해당 공장을 두고 “안전하다”는 말만 되풀이하며 탄두공장 확장을 추진해 주민들과 끊임없는 갈등을 빚어왔다. 더욱이 대전 한화 공장 내 KDI 공장시설의 영주 이전 결정을 두고 백 후보 측이 ‘투자 무산’이라거나 ‘특정 정치인의 반대 탓’이라며 정치적 선동을 이어가고 있다는 것이 민주당 측의 주장이다.

반면 지역구 황명선 국회의원은 시민의 생명과 안전을 지키는 동시에 논산의 미래 성장동력을 확보하기 위해, KDI 본사와 폭발 위험이 큰 유도무기 공장 대신 드론·무인 로봇 등 첨단무기 사업에 투자하고 확장하는 확약을 이끌어냈다고 덧붙였다.

한편, 이번에 참사가 발생한 한화에어로스페이스 대전사업장은 방위산업이라는 화려한 명성 뒤에 잔혹한 사고 잔혹사를 지니고 있어 주민들의 불안감을 한층 더 키우고 있다. 

해당 사업장에서는 지난 2018년 5월 고체 추진제 충전 작업 중 폭발로 5명이 숨졌고, 이어 2019년 2월에도 추진체 생산시설 폭발로 3명이 목숨을 잃었다. 

여기에 2026년 6월 1일 발생한 세척 작업 중 폭발 사고로 또다시 5명이 숨지면서, 지난 8년간 대전사업장에서 발생한 3건의 대형 폭발 사고로만 총 13명의 노동자가 목숨을 잃는 비극이 반복되고 있다.
