6·3 지방선거를 앞두고 제기된 '농약 판매점 돈 봉투 전달 의혹'과 관련해 국민의힘 김기웅 서천군수 후보 측이 "선거와 전혀 무관한 정상적인 거래 대금 정산"이라며 의혹을 전면 부인하고 정면 돌파에 나섰다.

최근 더불어민주당 측은 김기웅 후보를 겨냥해 농약 판매점에서 돈 봉투를 전달했다는 금품 살포 의혹을 제기하며 공세를 펼쳐왔다.

이에 대해 김 후보 측과 지역 사정에 밝은 현지 주민들은 일방적인 왜곡이라며 반박하고 나섰다. 

지역 주민들에 따르면 농촌 지역의 특성상 농약이나 각종 농자재 거래는 봄철에 외상으로 들여온 뒤 나중에 한꺼번에 정산하는 방식이 오랜 관행으로 자리 잡고 있다. 

단지 금전이 오간 시기가 선거철과 맞물렸다는 이유만으로 이를 불법 선거 자금이나 금품 살포로 연결 짓는 것은 농촌의 거래 현실을 무시한 악의적인 프레임 씌우기라는 지적이다.

김기웅 후보는 "사실관계가 확인되지도 않은 상태에서 무죄추정의 원칙마저 저버린 채 후보를 범죄자로 몰아세우고 있다"며 "이는 선거 막판 판세를 흔들기 위해 동원된 구태의연한 흑색선전이자 공세"라고 강한 유감을 표시했다.

김 후보는 이어 "서천 군민들께서는 표심을 왜곡하려는 일방적인 의혹 제기에 흔들리지 마시고, 지역 경제를 살릴 진짜 정책과 미래 비전이 누구에게 있는지 냉정하게 보고 현명한 판단을 내려달라"고 지지를 호소했다.

한편, 김 후보 선거대책본부는 이번 의혹 제기에 대한 맞불 조치로 더불어민주당 유승광 후보의 과거 교사 재직 시절 폭행 정황 및 학생 차별 의혹이 담긴 피해자 증언 녹취 파일을 전격 공개하며 상대 후보의 자질과 도덕성에 대한 역공을 펼쳤다. 

아울러 서천군선거관리위원회를 향해 유승광 후보 측의 대량 문자 발송 대행업체 로그 기록 및 사전 신고 내역을 철저히 대조해 불법 행위 여부를 엄중히 조사해 줄 것을 촉구했다.
