권선택 전 대전시장이 최근 논란이 거세게 일고 있는 대전·충남 통합 논의와 관련해 “명칭 경쟁보다 행정 효율과 주민의 삶의 질에 집중해야 한다”며 세 번째 소견을 밝혔다.

권 전 시장은 2026년도 마지막 날인 12월 31일 자신의 페이스북에 올린 ‘대전·충남 통합의 성공적 추진을 위한 세 번째 소견’에서 “통합 단체 명칭을 두고 ‘대전충남특별시’ ‘충남대전특별시’ 등 다양한 의견이 나오고 있으나, 특정 지명 포함 여부를 둘러싼 논쟁이 통합의 본질적 목표를 가릴 수 있다”고 지적했다.

그는 “이름에 매몰되면 행정 구조나 주민 생활 개선 같은 실질 논의는 뒤로 밀릴 우려가 크다”며 “통합의 명분과 미래 확장성을 함께 갖춘 명칭으로 ‘충청특별시’가 가장 바람직하다”고 제안했다.

권 전 시장은 특히 “단순 병렬식 명칭보다 충북·세종 등 인접 충청권이 향후 참여할 수 있는 열린 통합 개념이 필요하다”며 “그럴 때 공동체적 상징성과 역사성을 함께 담을 수 있다”고 강조했다.

그는 통합 논의 과정에서 제시된 ‘시장-교육감 러닝메이트제’ 등 특례 규정에 대해서도 우려를 나타냈다.

권 전 시장은 “교육감 선출권은 시민의 헌법적 권리이며, 런닝메이트 방식은 교육의 자주성과 정치적 중립을 훼손한다”면서 “교육은 백년대계인 만큼 행정 편의가 아닌 민주적 정당성이 우선되어야 한다”고 밝혔다.

이어 “시장에게 실질적 임명권을 부여하는 방식은 위헌 소지가 높다”며 “교육감은 반드시 직선제로 시민이 직접 선출해야 한다”고 강조했다.
