충남도가 천안아산 KTX역 인근에 ‘스포츠·문화·관광’을 아우르는 5만 석 규모의 대형 돔구장 건립을 추진한다. 

이와 관련 충남도는 18일 김태흠 도지사 기자회견을 통해 총 1조 원이 투입되는 ‘천안아산 복합 돔구장 건립사업’을 공식 발표하며, 충남의 문화경제 패러다임 전환을 선언했다.

2031년 완공을 목표로 추진되는 이 사업은 연중 프로야구 경기와 K팝 공연을 동시에 소화할 수 있는 전국 최대 규모의 실내 다목적 시설로, 천안·아산을 ‘대한민국 K컬처의 중심’으로 도약시키는 핵심 인프라로 꼽힌다. 

김 지사는 “천안아산 돔구장은 단순한 경기장이 아니라 스포츠, 공연, 관광이 결합된 미래형 복합문화체육공간”이라며 “항공·철도 교통의 중심지인 천안아산을 문화산업 허브로 육성하겠다”고 밝혔다.

돔구장은 KTX 천안아산역에서 도보 10~20분 거리의 20만㎡ 부지에 조성되며, 한국야구위원회(KBO)와 협의해 연간 30경기 이상 프로야구를 개최하고 150~200일 동안 K팝 콘서트를 비롯한 대형 공연, 전시, 기업행사 등을 열 계획이다. 

여기에 하이브(HYBE), 에스엠(SM), 제이와이피(JYP) 등 국내 주요 엔터테인먼트사와 협업해 공연장을 공동 브랜드화함으로써 ‘한국형 MSG 돔’ 모델을 목표로 한다.

아울러 인근에 건설 예정인 광역복합환승센터와 연계해 호텔, 쇼핑몰, 문화거리 조성 등 부대사업도 병행된다. 충남도는 이로 인해 관광객 증가와 소비 확산, 청년 일자리 창출 등 다층적인 경제 파급효과가 발생할 것으로 기대하고 있다.

재원 조달은 민간투자 유치와 국비 확보를 병행한다는 계획이다.

김 지사는 “도민 부담을 최소화하고 지속 가능한 재정 구조를 마련하기 위해 공론화와 전문가 검증을 병행하겠다”고 강조했다. 또한 오는 12월부터 부지 선정 및 타당성 조사 용역을 본격화해 2030년대 초 완공 목표에 속도를 낸다는 계획이다.

김 지사는 이날 두바이의 발전 사례를 언급하며 “사막의 도시가 세계의 문화·금융 허브로 성장했듯, 천안아산 돔구장이 대한민국 문화산업의 새로운 성장 거점이 되길 바란다”며 “문화의 힘이 미래 한국을 견인할 것”이라고 강조했다.

국내에서는 서울 고척스카이돔(1만6000석)이 현재 유일한 실내 돔구장으로, 충남도의 이번 계획은 ‘K컬처-스포츠 융합형 돔 인프라’로서 차세대 지역혁신 모델이 될지 주목된다.
