The Korea Minting, Security Printing, and Printing Corporation (KOMSCO) launched two new eco-friendly currency goods made from recycled waste generated during the currency manufacturing process simultaneously on the 24th at its official online store and currency product sales outlet in Mapo-gu, Seoul.

These new products, part of the KOMSCO's official brand "Moneymade," include the "Money Envelope" and the "Lucky Money Keychain." Both products are unique in that they are made from upcycled byproducts of currency production, such as defective printing paper and cut margins.

KOMSCO has improved upon the existing practice of incinerating approximately 100 tons of currency byproducts generated annually, repurposing them into recycled products. This has reduced disposal costs and laid the foundation for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management practices, including carbon emissions reduction and resource recycling.

The "Money Envelope" is inspired by the concept of "holding good fortune in an envelope made of money." The five-piece set combines traditional patterns with modern colors, and each envelope contains randomly arranged currency dust from four different denominations. The back of the envelope is printed with the message, "This envelope is made from eco-friendly paper recycled from currency byproducts." Priced at 11,000 won per set, it can be used for a variety of purposes, including holidays and thank-you messages.

The "Lucky Money Keychain" is Korea's first tangible keychain, featuring a piece of currency equivalent to a 50,000 won bill embedded in a transparent acrylic. The design, shaped like the number "50,000," symbolizes good fortune and good luck and is priced at 10,000 won.

To celebrate the launch of both products, the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation (KOMSCO) is offering a "3+1 Free Gift" event and a 10% discount for customers visiting its stores until the end of the year. Under the slogan "Happiness grows when shared," this promotion aims to encourage citizens to practice eco-friendly consumption in their daily lives.

CEO Sung Chang-hoon expressed his hope that the currency goods business will establish itself as a model for public participation in ESG practices. He added, "We will create a new public goods culture that shares the trust and hope inherent in currency with the public."

The Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation's latest initiative is significant in that it demonstrates a model for a "circular economy" by enabling a public institution to go beyond simple waste disposal and repurpose it into eco-friendly design products. This public-led, eco-friendly initiative is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring that ESG management becomes a sustainable social system, not a passing fad.
