국민의힘 장동혁 국회의원(충남 보령·서천)이 31일 대전시청 기자실에서 당 대표 출마와 관련 "제가 당 대표가 된다면 국민의힘 혁신의 출발점이 될 것"이라고 당 혁신을 강조하면서 당선에 강한 의지를 내비쳤다.

정치 인생의 출발지인 대전에서 출마 일정을 시작한 장 의원은 “충청권 민심을 대변하고 정당 정치의 새로운 변화를 주도하는 리더가 되겠다”며 “내부 분열과 전략 부재로 인한 반복된 선거 패배를 극복하기 위해 국민의힘을 체질 개선하는 데 집중할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

장 의원은 “국민의힘은 하나로 뭉치지 못한 채 전략 없이 싸워왔다”며 “앞으로는 치열하게 싸우면서도 국민에게 신뢰받는 야당, 정책 중심의 정당으로 변신해야 한다”고 강조했다. 

장 의원은 이를 위해 공천 시스템 개혁과 인재 양성, 정책 역량 강화를 당 혁신의 핵심 과제로 제시했다.

계엄과 탄핵 문제에 대해서도 소신을 드러냈다. 

장 의원은 “계엄사태가 발생한 정치적 배경과 야당의 입법 폭거로 인한 정치 마비 상황을 외면할 수 없다”며 “탄핵이 정치적으로 원만히 해결되지 못한 점 역시 국민의힘 내부 단결 실패 때문”이라고 자성했다. 

그는 “탄핵 전쟁터에서 출발하는 것이 아니라 계엄 필요성을 성찰하며 내부 단결을 통해 강력한 정당으로 거듭나야 한다”고 말했다.

충청권 기반 강화도 주요 공약으로 내세웠다. 

장 의원은 “충청인의 보수정당에 대한 기대를 회복하는 데 제 역할이 있다”며 “기초 및 광역단체장과의 협력을 강화하고 지역 현안을 중앙당에서 직접 챙기겠다”고 밝혔다.

전직 대통령 윤석열 전 대통령 면회 추진과 관련해서는 “정치 평가와 인물 예우는 별개 문제”라며 “당 대표로서 당연한 의례”라고 설명했다. 

장 의원은 다만 “계엄과 탄핵 문제를 반복해 논쟁하는 것은 의미가 없다”며 “미래를 향한 새로운 비전을 제시하는 데 전력을 다할 것”이라고 선을 그었다.

마지막으로 단일화 가능성에 대해서는 “이번 전당대회는 저의 정치 철학과 방향을 당원과 국민께 끝까지 보여드릴 기회”라며 “단일화는 고려하지 않고 완주할 것”이라고 단호하게 선을 그었다.

이날 당 대표 후보 등록 후 처음으로 대전을 찾았다고 밝힌 장동혁 의원은 이번 출마를 통해 국민의힘의 혁신적인 변화를 이끌며 보수 정당의 새 시대를 열겠다는 각오를 분명히 했다.
