더불어민주당 박수현 국회의원(충남 공주·부여·청양)은 7월 29일 최휘영 문화체육관광부 장관 후보자 인사청문회에서 지역신문 발전을 위한 정책 대전환을 강력히 촉구했다. 

박 의원은 현재 지역신문 발전기금이 크게 줄어들어 사업 규모가 축소된 점, 우선지원 대상사 선정 기준에 경영 안정성 점수가 너무 높고 지역 관련 기사 점수가 낮은 점, 그리고 정부광고의 지역 매체 집행 비율이 과소한 문제를 지적했다.

이에 대한 정책 대안으로 박수현 의원은 지역신문 발전기금 및 사업 규모의 확대 ,우선지원 대상사 선정 기준의 합리화와 대상 확대 ,정부광고 집행에서 지역 매체 비중 확대를 제시하며, 수도권 중심의 왜곡된 언론 환경을 개선하고 지역신문이 지역문화의 중심축 역할을 할 수 있도록 정책을 재정립할 필요가 있다고 강조했다.

박 의원은 최휘영 후보자도 언론인 출신임을 밝히며 지역신문의 중요성을 인정하고, 지역신문 발전기금과 정부광고의 균형 잡힌 집행 등 지역신문 재정의 안정적 지원을 챙기겠다는 입장을 밝혔다고 전했다. 

박 의원은 단순히 잘되는 언론사에만 지원하는 방식을 넘어서 지역문화 보호와 미래 성장의 자생력을 높이는 근본적인 발전 정책이 필요하며, 이것이 수도권 중심주의를 극복하고 진정한 지방시대를 여는 마중물이 되어야 한다고 주장했다.
