대전 한밭수목원이 국가 희귀·특산식물 보전기관으로 공식 지정되며, 기후변화에 따른 자생식물 보전의 핵심 거점으로 자리매김하게 됐다. 대전시는 7월 10일 임영석 국립수목원장 등이 참석한 가운데 현판식을 열고, 한밭수목원의 본격적인 보전 활동 시작을 알렸다.

국가희귀·특산식물 보전기관은 멸실 위험이 높은 희귀 및 특산식물을 수집·증식해 현지 외(ex-situ) 보전과 생물다양성 증진에 기여하는 역할을 맡는다. 

한밭수목원은 현재 목본 1284종, 초본 968종 등 총 2252분류군의 식물을 보유하고 있으며, 이 중 섬국수나무, 흰인가목, 조도만두나무 등 30종의 희귀식물과 44종의 특산식물이 포함돼 있다.

이번 지정으로 한밭수목원은 자생식물의 체계적 보전과 증식 연구를 강화하고, 시민이 직접 참여할 수 있는 산림교육 프로그램도 확대할 계획이다. 도심형 수목원이라는 장점을 살려 시민과 함께하는 식물보전 활동, 자생식물 모니터링, 교육 자료 개발 등 다양한 프로그램이 추진될 전망이다.

박성림 한밭수목원장은 “국립수목원과의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 지역과 국가가 함께하는 지속 가능한 보전 활동을 펼치겠다”며, “기후 위기로 사라질 위기에 놓인 자생식물 보전과 증식에 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.
