충남교육청이 학교 교육과정의 자율성과 다양성 강화를 위한 본격적인 현장 지원에 나섰다. 

이를 위해 충남교육청은 8일 공주에 위치한 충청남도교육청국제교육원에서 ‘2025 학교자율시간 컨설턴트 연수’를 실시하고, 2022 개정 교육과정에 맞춘 자율시간 도입의 내실화를 도모했다.

이날 연수에는 도내 자율시간 컨설턴트(상담사) 60여 명과 시군 교육지원청의 장학사들이 참석했다. 참석자들은 학교자율시간의 개념과 정책 방향, 실제 운영 사례 등을 중심으로 실습형 교육을 받았다.

‘학교자율시간’은 학교가 자체적으로 학생과 지역 특성에 맞춰 교과 외 교육활동이나 새로운 과목을 운영할 수 있도록 한 제도로, 기존 교육과정 틀을 유연하게 확장할 수 있다는 점에서 주목받고 있다. 초등학교의 경우, 오는 2025학년도부터 34학년을 시작으로, 2026년에는 36학년으로 확대 적용된다.

연수에서는 충남교육청이 제작한 학교자율시간 개설 안내서와 자체 점검표 해설, 고시 외 과목 개설 절차, 자율과목 실습 등의 프로그램이 진행됐다. 이를 바탕으로 향후 각 학교에서는 지역별 수요에 맞춘 맞춤형 컨설팅을 통해 실질적 운영을 지원받게 된다.

중학교에서도 자율시간 운영이 점차 확대되는 중이다. 현재 도내 29개 중학교에서는 ‘인공지능과 문제해결’, ‘미디어와 민주시민’, ‘서천 앎과 삶’ 등 특색 있는 과목이 운영되고 있으며, 총 10개 과목이 공식 승인돼 시행 중이다.

김지철 충남교육감은 “학교자율시간은 학생이 주도적으로 성장할 수 있는 교육과정 혁신의 핵심 요소”라며, “학교의 자율성과 교원의 실행 역량이 함께 성장할 수 있도록 지속적인 정책 지원을 이어가겠다”고 밝혔다.
