과학수도로 불리는 대전이 대한민국 우주산업의 미래를 여는 전진기지로 한 걸음 더 나아간다. 대전시는 ‘대전 우주기술 연구·활용 특구’가 2025년도 규제자유특구로 최종 선정됐다고 21일 밝혔다.

이번 특구 지정은 중소벤처기업부가 주관한 제15차 규제자유특구위원회를 통해 확정된 것으로, 대전시는 약 9개월간 지역 내 연구기관 및 우주기업들과 긴밀히 협력하며 사업 계획을 구체화해왔다.

이번 특구의 가장 큰 특징은 민간 주도의 기술 실증과 사업화 촉진에 초점이 맞춰졌다는 점이다. 기존 국가 중심의 개발 체계에서 벗어나, 기업이 주도하고 연구기관이 협력하는 새로운 산업 모델로 전환하는 의미 있는 출발선이다.

사업은 대전시가 전반적인 기획을 담당하며, 한국항공우주연구원이 실증을 총괄하고 대전테크노파크는 참여 기업의 운영을 지원한다. 한화에어로스페이스, KAIST를 비롯한 11개 우주 관련 기업과 기관이 함께 참여해, 우주추진용 고압가스 기반 부품의 시험·제작·인증 전 과정을 실환경에서 실증하게 된다.

특구는 대전 유성구와 대덕구 일원 약 515만㎡ 규모 부지에서 2025년 6월부터 2029년 말까지 운영된다. 총 194억 원의 예산이 투입되며, 향후 성과에 따라 장기적인 확대 운영도 가능하다.

대전시는 이번 특구 운영을 통해 약 675억 원의 생산 유발 효과와 389명의 고용 창출이 기대된다고 분석했다. 중장기적으로는 ‘2030 대전 우주산업 육성 종합계획’과 연계해 누적 1조 3천억 원 규모의 경제적 효과를 창출한다는 목표다.

아울러 우주산업 클러스터의 핵심 축으로서 추진 기술 관련 원천 연구 역량 강화, 전문 인력 양성, 민간 투자 유도 등을 통해 지속 가능한 우주산업 생태계 조성에 박차를 가할 계획이다.

대전시 관계자는 “우리별 1호부터 누리호까지 이어온 대한민국 우주산업의 출발점이자 중심지는 대전”이라며 “이번 특구 지정을 계기로 민간 주도의 우주 기술 혁신이 현실화될 수 있도록 전폭적인 지원과 투자를 이어가겠다”고 강조했다.
