충남 천안시가 마침내 인구 70만 명을 넘어섰다. 

천안시에 따르면 5월 14일 기준 천안의 총인구는 70만 29명으로 집계되며, 지난해 말보다 2700여 명 증가했다. 

인구 70만 명 돌파는 시 승격 62년 만에 11배가 넘는 성장을 기록한 셈이다.

1963년 시로 승격 당시 약 6만 2000명에 불과했던 천안의 인구는 수도권 배후 도시로서의 입지, 전략적 도시개발, 기업 유치 및 정주환경 개선 등의 복합 요인이 맞물리며 꾸준한 증가세를 이어왔다.

천안시는 최근 5년간 1000개 이상의 기업을 유치하며 약 15조 원 규모의 투자를 이끌어냈고, 이를 통해 3만 개 이상의 일자리를 창출했다. 오스템임플란트, ㈜태성 등 우량 기업들이 잇따라 정착하면서 지역 산업 기반도 빠르게 강화되고 있다.

또한, 321개 스타트업을 육성하며 창업 생태계 활성화에도 성과를 냈다. 스타트업 투자 유치액은 894억 원에 달하며, 신규 고용 인원도 690여 명에 이른다.

글로벌 기업들과의 협력도 눈에 띈다. 구글클라우드, 아마존, 엔비디아 등과 손잡고 AI, 클라우드, 3D 솔루션 등 첨단기술 기반의 스마트도시 구축을 추진 중이며, 이는 지난해 정부의 거점형 스마트도시 사업에 선정되며 탄력을 받고 있다.

올해 3월에는 합계출산율 1.0명 ,청년 비중 33% ,생활인구 200만 명 달성 등 구체적인 목표를 담은 ‘포유(4YOU) 프로젝트’를 발표하고 본격 실행에 나섰다.

이 프로젝트는 정주환경 개선, 생활인구 확대, 출산율 반등 등을 목표로 단계별 과제를 추진하고 있으며, 인구영향평가제 도입, 다자녀 가구 지원 확대, 인구 인식 개선 교육 등의 정책도 포함됐다.

김석필 천안시장 권한대행 부시장은 “이번 인구 70만 명 돌파는 단순한 수치 이상의 의미를 가진다”며 “도시, 행정, 시민이 함께 이룬 성장의 결실이며, 앞으로도 정주인구와 유동인구가 조화를 이루는 지속가능한 도시로 발전해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
