전통 심마니들의 로망이라 불리는 최고급 산삼, 이른바 ‘만둥이삼’이 강원도 홍천 깊은 산중에서 발견돼 화제를 모으고 있는 가운 충남 서산에 위치한 한서심마니회 홍영선 회장이 감정 소견을 밝힌 사실이 알려 지면서 해당 산삼에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다.

산삼에 대한 감정 소견을 밝힌 홍 회장은 "‘만둥이삼’은 심마니들 사이에서 구전되어 온 전설적인 산삼으로, ‘일만 개의 씨앗을 뿌려 단 한 뿌리만 살아남은 삼’이라는 뜻을 갖고 있다"며 "‘심봤다’의 ‘심’이 바로 약이 되는 산삼을 의미하는 은어일 정도로, 그 가치는 이루 말할 수 없다"면서 이번 산삼에 대한 가치를 가늠하게 했다.

이번에 만둥이삼을 채심한 이는 홍천 지역에서 2대째 심마니의 길을 걷고 있는 박 모(59) 씨다. 그는 매년 아버지가 생전에 손수 뿌려놓은 ‘묵밭삼터’를 돌보며 산삼을 찾는 전통적인 방식으로 심마니 활동을 이어오고 있다.

박 씨는 “그날 따라 아버지 말씀도 떠오르고, 울타리 너머가 유독 궁금해졌다”며 “삼을 캐는 도구인 마대를 들고 몇 걸음 옮기자마자 삼잎과 삼꽃이 남다른 떼삼을 발견했다”고 당시 상황을 회고했다고 홍 회장은 전했다.

박 씨가 채심한 삼은 뇌두 길이만도 한 뼘에 달할 정도로 성장한 상태였으며, 단박에 “이게 바로 아버지가 말하던 만둥이삼이구나”라는 직감을 받았다고 한다.

해당 산삼은 한서심마니산삼협회의 심마니이자 감정가로 활동하는 홍영선 회장의 감정 소견을 통해 ‘지종산삼’으로 분류되었으며, 나이는 약 57년산으로 추정됐다. 

감정가는 무려 8800만 원. 특히 이 삼은 과거 임금님께 진상하던 품격의 산삼으로 평가되며, 그 희귀성과 약효 가치가 매우 높다는 소견이 나왔다.

산삼 감정에 있어 냉정한 감정사로 유명한 홍 회장은 산삼 감정과 관련된 필독서를 발간 하는 등 산삼 감정 평가에 대한 믿음과 공정성으로 관련 업계에서는 짠돌이로 통한다.

그만 큼 홍 회장의 감정 소견에 대한 신뢰가 두터워 지면서 전국의 심마니들이 산삼을 채심 하면 홍 회장에게 감정을 의뢰 할 정도다.

홍영선 감정가는 “이 정도 수준의 산삼은 1년에 4~5뿌리 정도밖에 채심되지 않는다”며, “올해 봄부터 이렇게 뛰어난 산삼이 발견되는 걸 보면, 한 해가 길하게 흘러갈 징조로 본다”고 밝혔다.
