충청남도교육청이 4월 22일, 충청남도교육청교육연수원에서 ‘제2기 충남 학생영어기자단’ 발대식을 개최하고 본격적인 활동에 돌입했다.

이번 영어기자단은 “배우는 영어에서 사용하는 영어로”라는 정책 기조 아래, 학생들이 실생활 속에서 영어를 자연스럽게 사용하며 의사소통 능력을 키울 수 있도록 마련된 프로그램이다. 

무엇보다 성적과 무관한 비경쟁적 학습환경에서 영어를 접하게 함으로써, 학생 개개인의 창의성과 표현력을 끌어올리는 것이 핵심이다.

이날 발대식에는 초등학교 5학년부터 고등학교 2학년까지 선발된 99명의 학생기자단과 12명의 지도교사, 학부모 등 약 200여 명이 참석했다. 위촉장 수여와 더불어 영어기사 작성을 위한 특별 강연도 함께 진행돼 학생들의 첫걸음을 응원했다.

영어기자단은 앞으로 원어민 강사와 지도교사의 협력 아래, 학교생활과 지역사회의 이야기를 학생들만의 시각으로 영어 기사로 담아낼 예정이다. 

이들은 각자가 작성한 콘텐츠를 온라인 ‘충남학생영어신문’을 통해 국내외 독자와 공유하며, 오는 6월부터 총 3회의 정기 온라인 발행과 10월의 특별판 종이 신문 발행도 계획되어 있다.

김지철 교육감은 “학생들이 영어를 실제로 쓰는 경험을 통해 글쓰기뿐 아니라 소통 능력, 창의적 표현력까지 함께 기르게 될 것”이라며, “즐겁고 의미 있는 영어학습 환경 조성을 위해 앞으로도 다양한 프로그램을 지속적으로 확대해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

한편, 충남학생영어기자단은 지난해 첫 출범 이래 학생 주도의 콘텐츠 생산과 실용 영어 학습을 결합한 사례로 주목을 받아왔다. 올해 두 번째 기수를 맞은 가운데, 학생 중심 영어교육의 새로운 모델로 자리매김할 수 있을지 귀추가 주목된다.

Chungnam Office of Education, Official Launch of the 2nd Student English Reporter Group…

On April 22, the Chungnam Office of Education held an inauguration ceremony for the ‘2nd Chungnam Student English Reporter Group’ at the Chungnam Office of Education Training Institute and began full-scale activities.

Under the policy of “Learning English to Using English,” this English Reporter Group program is designed to help students develop their communication skills by naturally using English in real life situations.

Above all, the key is to enhance each student’s creativity and expressiveness by exposing them to English in a non-competitive learning environment unrelated to grades.

Approximately 200 people attended the inauguration ceremony, including 99 student reporters selected from 5th graders in elementary school to 2nd graders in high school, 12 instructors, and parents. In addition to awarding certificates of appointment, a special lecture on writing English articles was also held to encourage the students’ first steps.

The English Journalists will continue to write English articles about school life and local communities from the perspectives of students, in cooperation with native English-speaking instructors and instructors.

They will share the content they each wrote with domestic and international readers through the online ‘Chungnam Student English Newspaper’, and a total of three regular online publications are planned starting in June, as well as a special paper edition in October.

Superintendent of Education Kim Ji-cheol said, “Through the experience of actually using English, students will develop not only writing skills but also communication skills and creative expression skills,” and added, “We will continue to expand various programs in the future to create a fun and meaningful English learning environment.”

Meanwhile, since its first launch last year, the Chungnam Student English Journalists have been in the spotlight as a case that combines student-led content production and practical English learning. As it is its second year, attention is focused on whether it can establish itself as a new model for student-centered English education.
