대전시가 자율주행 대중교통 시대를 앞당기기 위해 자율주행 상용화 지구 조성 사업에 본격적으로 착수했다. 

20일, 한국전자통신연구원(ETRI)에서 열린 착수보고회에서는 남시덕 대전시 교통국장과 최정단 ETRI 본부장, 그리고 ㈜무브투, ㈜테슬라시스템, ㈜쿠바, ㈜알티스트 등 공동사업 수행기관의 대표 및 연구진이 참석해 사업 추진 방향을 논의하고 협력 의지를 다졌다.

대전시는 2025년 12월부터 대덕특구와 세종터미널을 연결하는 26.9km 구간에서 자율주행 버스를 운행할 계획이다. 이를 통해 충청권 광역 대중교통망과 연계된 자율주행 여객운송 서비스를 도입하고, 미래형 스마트 모빌리티 도시로의 도약을 목표로 하고 있다.

이번 사업에는 총 39억 원이 투입되며, 2028년 12월까지 49개월 동안 진행된다. 2025년 11월까지는 인프라 구축에 집중하고, 이후 2025년 12월부터 2028년 12월까지는 운영 및 실증을 통해 자율주행 시스템을 검증할 예정이다.
