대전시가 13일 기초과학연구원 과학문화센터에서 미래 청정 에너지원으로 주목받는 핵융합 에너지 산업을 육성하기 위해 ‘핵융합 산업협력 국제파트너십 협약’을 체결했다고 밝혔다. 

이장우 대전시장, 오영국 한국핵융합에너지연구원장, 리차드 존 버터리(Richard J. Buttery) 미국 제너럴아토믹스(MFE) 그룹 부사장이 참석한 가운데, 핵융합 기술 개발 및 산업 육성을 위한 상호 협력을 약속했다.

이번 협약에 따라 대전시는 미국 국립 핵융합 연구 시설인 DⅢ-D의 개방 및 연구 지원, 한국 및 대전광역시 관련 기관들과의 DⅢ-D 프로그램 협력 강화, 그리고 지역 민간 산업 파트너들과의 협력을 통해 핵융합 기술 공동 발전을 도모할 예정이다. 

DⅢ-D는 미국 에너지부가 소유하고 제너럴 아토믹스가 운영하는 핵융합 연구 시설로, 이날 협약 체결 직후 제너럴아토믹 측은 DⅢ-D 프로젝트 추진 현황 및 한국 기업의 참여 방법에 대한 설명회를 진행했다.

이장우 대전시장은 “인공지능(AI) 시대가 본격적으로 열리면서 전력 수급 문제가 새로운 화두로 떠오르고 있다”며 “핵융합 에너지는 AI 시대 전력 수급의 핵심 에너지원이 될 것”이라고 강조했다. 

또한, 이번 협약이 미국 에너지부의 승인을 받은 것으로, 대전시가 전국 지자체 중 최초로 미국과의 핵융합 분야 협력을 공식 추진하게 됐음을 알렸다.

대전시는 이번 협약을 통해 지역 기업들이 미국 핵융합 프로젝트에 참여하고 해외 시장에 진출할 수 있도록 적극 지원할 계획이다. 이를 위해 핵융합에너지연구원과 공동으로 사업 분석을 진행하고, 기술 역량과 자격을 갖춘 대전 소재 기업을 선별하여 지원할 예정이다.

한편, 이날 협약식과 함께 ‘2025년 핵융합산업 상생한마당’이 개최되어, 핵융합 분야 신기술 소개 및 기술 이전, 기업 수출 지원, 패밀리 기업 간담회, 전시회 등의 다양한 프로그램이 진행됐다. 

행사에는 핵융합 연구원, 기업 관계자 등 200여 명이 참석하여 핵융합 산업의 발전 방향과 협력 방안을 모색하는 자리를 가졌다.

대전시는 앞으로도 핵융합 산업 생태계를 활성화하고, 지역 기업의 글로벌 진출을 적극 지원할 방침이다.
