충남 홍성군이 멸실된 홍주읍성 성곽 복원과 정비사업을 추진한다.

이를 위해 홍성군은 조선시대 석축 성곽의 생생한 모습을 되살리기 위한 발굴조사에 착수하는 등 본격적인 준비에 돌입했다고 5일 밝혔다.

성곽 복원을 위해 홍성군은 6월부터 조양문 남측에서 농협 오관지점까지 2,770㎡ 구간에 대한 정밀 발굴조사를 실시해 2025년 8월까지 석축 성곽의 잔존양상을 면밀히 파악할 계획이다. 

이를 통해 멸실 성곽 복원과 정비를 위한 학술자료와 실시설계의 기초자료를 확보한다는 방침이다.

이에 앞서 북문 동측 성벽 정비공사(석성 복원 H = 3.0m ~ 4.0m, L=100m)가 지난해 11월 준공된 데 이어 올해에는 북동측 성곽(북문 동측성벽 완료지점부터 조양문 북쪽 구간) 정비공사 착공 예정으로 홍주읍성 복원사업에 가속도가 붙을 전망이다.

특히 2012년 남문(홍화문) 복원 이후 오랜 숙원이었던 북문 문루 복원 또한 올해 6월 준공을 앞두고 있어 홍주읍성 4대문 완성의 상징적 시작점이 될 것으로 기대를 모으고 있다.

이용록 홍성군수는 “2026년까지 멸실 성곽 복원과 정비를 완료하기 위해 국비 확보에 전력을 다하고 있다.”라며“올해에만 43억원의 국비를 확보했고 내년도 90억원 규모의 국비를 국가유산청에 신청했다.”고 밝혔다.
