4월 총선에서 천안 출마를 희망했던 양승조 (전)충남도지사가 민주당 전략공천관리위원회의 홍성·예산 전략공천 결정을 수용하고, 지지자들과 함께 26일 오전 11시 천안시청에서 제22대 국회의원 선거에서 홍성·예산 출마를 선언했다. 

민주당 전략공천관리위원회는  “충남 홍성·예산은 13대국회 이후 한 번도 국회에 입성하지 못했던 우리 당에 상당히 어려운 지역임에도 양 전 지사께서 선당후사의 정신으로 22대 총선을 준비하는 모든 동지들께서 상당히 귀감으로 보여지리라 생각한다”면서 홍성·예산 전략공천을 발표했다. 

양승조 (전)지사는 기자회견을 통해 “중앙당의 판단과 요청을 받아들이겠다. 저는 민주당의 당원, 충절과 의리의 고향 충청인의 후예, 양승조이기 때문이다”며 수락 배경을 설명했다. 

양승조 (전)충남지사는 “두려움도 있고 아쉬움도 있다. 천안시민들께서 주신 큰 사랑을 천안(을) 국회의원이 되어 보답하는 길은 불가능해졌지만, 천안을 대한민국 일등도시로 만들겠다는 사명감은 약해지지 않았다는 또 하나의 약속과 마음 다짐으로 이를 이겨내고자 한다”며 천안시민에 대한 감사와 아쉬움도 피력했다.  

양승조 (전)지사는 “홍성‧예산은 저 양승조를 유능한 행정가로 만들어준 토양이다.  홍성‧예산에서의 승리로 충남 민주당 승리의 기폭제가 되고 싶다”면서 지지와 성원을 호소했다.
