1952년 1월 25일생으로 올해 72세인 박병석 국회의원이 내년 4월 실시하는 제22대 국회의원 불출마를 선언했다.

박 의원은 6일 오후 대전시의회 기자실을 찾아 제22대 국회의원 불출마를 선언하고 자신의 입장을 밝혔다. 

불출마를 선언한 박 의원은 이날 "불출마는 국회의장 자리에 오를 때부터 결정된 사안"이라며 "발표 시점에 대해 국정감사와 정기국회 이후를 놓고 고민한 결과 이같이 결정하게 됐다"고 말했다.

그러면서 이번 총선 불출마 선언이 정계 은퇴는 아니라고 선을 그었다. 

박 의원은 "현재 당 상임고문을 맡고 있으며, 이번에 하는 것은 22대 총선에 출마하지 않겠다는 것"이라 "국회의장을 역임한 인물은 정치 발전에서 벗어날 수 없었기에 항상 무거운 마음을 갖고 있다. 국가를 위해 헌신하는 방법은 국회를 통해서만 가능한 것이 아니다"라고 말해 또 다른 정치 행보에 나설 뜻임을 암시하는 발언을 했다.

박 의원은 또 자신의 지역구에 대한 향후 방향에 대해서 "6선 국회의원과 국회의장을 만들어 주신 주민들과 당원들이 현명한 선택을 해주실 것"이라고 말했다.

그러면서 "저의 빈 자리는 시대적 소명에 투철하고, 균형감각과 열정을 갖춘 새 사람이 이어주길 염원한다”며 "여의도를 떠나더라도 국가와 대전에 대한 헌신을 멈추지 않을 것"이라고 말했다.

한편 이날 박병석(대전 서구갑) 국회의원이 내년 총선 불출마를 공식화하면서 서구을 지역의 다음 주자에 관심이 벌써부터 집중되고 있다.
