충남 서산시가 운산면 신창리 산15-2번지 일원(373,598㎡)이 산림청으로부터‘서산 가야산 수목원 조성 예정지’로 지정‧승인됐다고 밝혔다.

산림청으로부터 수목원 조성 예정지로 승인을 받으면서 서산시는 민선8기 공약으로 추진하는 ‘서산 가야산 수목원 조성 사업’에 탄력을 받을 것으로 에상된다.

이에따라 서산시는 자생식물의 체계적 증식‧보전과 수목원 문화서비스 제공을 위해 총사업비 80억 원을 투입해 지정‧승인된 지역에 2025년부터 2027년까지 수목관리센터, 온실, 양묘장, 19개 주제원 등을 조성할 예정이다.

서산시는 지난해 수립한 가야산 수목원 조성 기본계획을 바탕으로 산림청에 수목원 조성 예정지 지정 신청을 했으며, 산림청에서는 현장 방문과 전문가 자문회의를 통해 예정지 지정을 승인했다.

수목원 조성 사업은 지난 10월 충남도의 지방재정투자심사도 통과한 상태로, 시는 내년 실시설계를 비롯한 관련 행정절차를 이행할 예정으로 이번 사업은 민선8기 공약사항인 가야산 산림휴양복지숲 조성 사업의 일환으로 진행됐다.

가야산 산림휴양복지숲 조성 사업은 시민들이 생애주기별 산림복지 혜택을 체계적으로 누릴 수 있도록 자연휴양림, 치유의 숲, 수목원 등을 조성하는 사업으로 현재 서산시는 자연휴양림 조성 사업부터 순차적으로 절차를 밟아가고 있으며, 이번 가야산 수목원 조성 예정지 지정‧승인으로 사업 추진에 더욱 속도가 붙을 것으로 전망된다.
