가로림만 국가해양생태공원을 추진하고 있는 충남 서산시가 18만 서산시민과 220만 충남도민의 염원인 가로림만 국가해양생태공원 조성사업의 신속 추진을 촉구하는 공동건의문을 지난 7일 해양수산부에 전달했다고 밝혔다.

서산시에 따르면 서산시는 지난달 28일 충남시장군수협의회에서 이완섭 서산시장의 제안으로 채택된 ‘가로림만 국가해양생태공원 조성사업 신속 추진 촉구’ 공동건의문을 해양수산부 해양생태과장에게 전달했다.

서산시는 이날 공동건의문을 전달 하면서 김태흠 충남도지사와 15개 시장‧군수의 서명이 담긴 건의문과 함께 가로림만 국가해양생태공원 조성사업에 대한 염원이 담긴 이완섭 서산시장의 친서를 전달했다.

공동건의문을 전달받은 해양수산부 해양생태과장은 가로림만의 해양생태계 가치와 보전 필요성에 공감하며, 가로림만이 1호 국가해양생태공원으로 조성될 수 있도록 적극 추진해 나갈 계획이라고 밝혔다고 서산시가 전했다.

가로림만 국가해양생태공원 조성사업은 국내 최초‧최대 해양생물보호구역으로 지정된 가로림만에 환경가치를 보전하고 지역발전을 동시에 실현할 수 있는 해양생태 관광거점을 조성하는 사업으로, 윤석열 대통령과 김태흠 충남도지사의 공약사항으로 현재 예비타당성 조사를 진행하고 있으며, 올해 말에 최종 결과가 발표될 예정이다.

지난해 해양생태계법 개정으로 가로림만이 국가해양생태공원으로 조성될 수 있는 법적 근거가 마련됐다.
