‘1호 온천도시’ 지정을 위해 행정력을 집중하고 있는 충남 아산시가 28일 세종시 정부종합청사에서 진행된 온천도시 지정 평가의 마지막 관문인 PT 심사에 박경귀 시장이 직접 참여해 아산시가 준비하고 있는 비전을 소개하는 등 열정을 보였다. 

이날 박경귀 시장의 PT 심사 발표자 참여는 온천도시 지정과 추후 사업추진에 대한 아산시의 강력한 의지를 피력한 것으로, 박 시장은 앞서 진행된 현장 심사 때도 헬스케어스파산업진흥원을 방문한 심사단을 영접하고 직접 시설을 소개하기도 했다. 

박 시장은 발표에서 “코로나19 이후 힐링, 웰니스 관광에 대한 수요가 급증하고 있다”면서 “목욕 중심 온천 문화의 중심지였던 아산시는 이제 온천의 의료적 효과검증을 통한 온천의료 관광과 온천산업 활성화를 위해 노력하고 있다”고 말했다. 

박 시장은 온천 전담 기관인 (재)헬스케어스파산업진흥원의 온천 분야 R&D와 기업 지원 업무수행, 성공적인 온천 관련 대형 국책 사업 수행 경험, 전국 최초 대한민국 온천박람회 유치 등 온천산업 부흥을 위한 지속적인 시의 관심과 노력 등을 중점적으로 설명했다. 

그러면서 “독일 바덴바덴, 프랑스 비쉬, 일본 유후인 등 외국은 온천지구를 글로벌 휴양지로 육성하고 있고, 레저뿐 아니라 의료와 휴양으로 그 기능이 확대되고 있다”면서 온천의 의료적 효능 검증을 위한 시민 코호트 연구 추진 계획과 온천 지도사 양성 계획 등도 소개했다. 

박 시장은 “무엇보다 아산시는 조선 왕실 온천이었던 온양온천을 보유하고 있다. 국내 최고(最古) 온천 역사를 가진 아산시가 ‘1호 온천도시’ 브랜드를 획득할 경우 지역 온천산업은 물론, 대한민국 온천산업 전체에 새로운 활력이 될 것”이라고 강조했다. 

한편 온천도시는 온천법 시행령 제6조의 2(온천도시의 지정)에 근거해 온천 온도 및 성분, 온천 관련 지역축제, 온천 이용현황 및 발전 가능성 등을 따져 행안부 장관이 지자체 신청을 받아 지정한다. 

지난 6월 1일부터 7일까지 첫 온천도시 지정을 두고 시작된 공모에 충남에서는 아산시가 유일하게 도전장을 냈고, 충북 충주시, 경북 울진군, 경남 창녕군 등이 ‘전국 최초 온천도시 지정’ 타이틀을 두고 치열한 경쟁을 펼치는 중이다. 

행정안전부는 8월 말께 최종 선정된 온천도시를 발표할 예정이다.
