백성현 논산시장이 “70여 년의 세월을 군과 함께 지내오며 크고 작은 피해를 감내해 온 논산시민에 대한 국가적 뒷받침이 절실히 필요하다”고 호소했다.

백 시장은 지난 19일 계룡 문화예술의전당에서 열린 ‘2022년 충남 국방산업 전문가 포럼’에 참석해 이같이 호소하고 “농업기반의 도시였으나 국방ㆍ군수산업을 토대로 변화와 혁신을 이뤄낸 미국 앨라배마 주의 ‘헌츠빌’처럼 논산의 살 거리를 새로이 마련해 소멸의 도시에서 부흥의 도시로 탈바꿈시킬 것이며, 그 중심에는 군수산업이 있다”고 강조했다.

‘국방혁신 4.0과 충남의 미래’를 주제로 개최한 이번 포럼에서 축사에 나선 백 시장은 “군수산업은 나라의 힘과 흥망성쇠를 나타내는 가늠자인 동시에 미래과학을 선도하고 지역의 정주 여건을 개선하는 핵심 산업 분야”라며 “이웃 도시들과의 긴밀한 협력을 바탕으로, 논산시를 대한민국 굴지의 군수산업 메카로 도약시키는 데 매진하겠다”는 의지를 피력했다.

이어 “충남 남부권 대부분의 도시가 인구소멸의 위기에 처한 가운데, 젊은 청년들에게 양질의 일자리를 마련해주고 지역에 머물 동기를 만들어줘야 한다”며 “국방 자원이 풍부하고 사통팔달 교통의 요지인 논산이 군수산업 중심 정책대전환의 첨병이 되어 지역소멸 위기 극복에 앞장서겠다”는 뜻을 덧붙였다.
