백성현 논산시장이 공약사업으로 추진 중 인  경기도 과천 소재 ‘방위사업청’ 논산 유치전에 빨간불이 들어왔다.

 

이같은 우려는 지난 21일 일요일 윤석열 대통령이 이장우 대전시장과 통화에서 방위사업청 대전이전에 힘을 실어줬기 때문이다.

 

이장우 대전시장은 21일 긴급 언론 브리핑을 통해 윤 대통령과 방위사업청 대전이전과 관련된 통화 내용을 공개했다.

 

이 시장은 "윤 대통령이 전화 통화에서 방위사업청 이전 신속 추진을  위한 전폭적인 지원을 약속받았다"고 밝혔다.

 

이 시장은 또 방위사업청 이전과 관련된 예산도 당초 120억 원에서 대통령이 통화에서 설계비 90억 원 증액 약속으로  관련예산이 210억 원으로 증가했다고도 밝혔다.

 

사실상 방위사업청 대전이전에 대통령이 쐐기를 밖은 것으로 해석되는 대목이다.

 

그동안 백성현 논산시장은 방위사업청 논산이전을 위해 정치권을 찾아 당위성을 설명 하는 등 유치전에 나섰다.

 

하지만 백성현 논산시장의 이같은 노력에도 불구하고 방위사업청은 대통령까지 나서 대전으로 이전하는 것에 힘을 싫으면서, 사실상 대전으로 이전이 확정됐다고 봄이 타당할 것으,로 보인다.

 

이같은 논리가 전개되면서 애당초 백성현 시장의 방위사업청 논산이전 추진은 '헛발질'을 한것이 아니냐는 지적이 나오고, 백 시장이 정무감각이 뒤떨어졌다는 지적도 함께 나오고 있다.

 

이러한 지적이 이는데는 애당초 방위사업청 대전 이전은 대통령 공약사항으로 백성현 논산시장이 대통령 공약사항을 뒤집기 위해 무리수를 뒀다는  지적이다.

 

결과적으로 처음부터 대통령 공약사항을 뒤집지 못할 것을 알면서 제대로 백 시장이 헛발질을 한것이 아니냐는 헛발질 논란에 휩싸이게 됐다.

 

김태흠 충남지사도 최근 논산시청을 방문한 자리에서 언론에 "백 시장이 방사청 유치를 건의했지만, 대통령 공약사업으로 추진되는 것을 나설 수 없다"는 뜻을 분명히 밝힌 바 있다.

 

이는 백 시장이 대통령 공약사항에 반기를 든것으로 해석되는 대목으로 김 지사는 애당초 실현 가능성이 없다고 판단한 것으로 보인다.

 

이날 김 지사는 "육군사관학교 유치를 뒤로 빼고 방위청 유치를 전면에 내세우는 것은 두 개의 사업을 모두 놓칠 수 있다"는 우려를 표해 논산시의 방위사업청 유치전이 무리수가 있음을 우회 지적했다.

 

하지만, 논산시는 방사청 이전은 단순한 지역 차원을 넘어 국가 전체와 다양한 산업을 끌어오는 일이라며 논산은 지정학적으로 한반도 중심에 위치해 방사청 이전에 최적지라며 유치 계획을 수립하고 있다.

 

논산시 관계자는 "지금 현재로서는 방사청 유치를 포기할 상태는 아니다"라며 "자세한 내용을 검토한 뒤 후속 대책을 마련하겠다"고 밝혔다.
